Management Systems

ISO 45001: 2018

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems. It was published in March 2018 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and is designed to help organizations of all sizes and industries improve their OH&S performance.

Goal of ISO 45001 is to prevent work-related injury and ill health, and to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all workers. It does this by requiring organizations to implement a systematic approach to OH&S management, which includes.

What it Does

  • Identifies hazards : These are anything with the potential to cause harm, like faulty equipment, hazardous materials, or unsafe work practices.
  • Evaluates risks : This involves assessing the likelihood and severity of harm that could occur from each hazard.
  • Controls risks : Based on the evaluation, you develop and implement measures to minimize the likelihood and severity of harm. This could involve eliminating hazards, substituting with safer alternatives, engineering controls, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment (PPE).

Why it’s Important:

  • Proactive approach to safety : It helps prevent accidents and injuries before they happen, leading to a safer work environment.
  • Legal compliance : Many countries have regulations requiring risk assessments in workplaces.
  • Reduced costs : Preventing accidents saves money from medical bills, lost productivity, and downtime.
  • Improved employee morale : A safe workplace fosters trust and confidence in the organization.
